Nutrition information is imperative for your diabetes diet. To that end, we would like to shed a little more light on a useful function in the “Food” screen that you might have overlooked.
Have you ever wondered how many carbs your homemade cookies actually have? Or how many calories are in those delicious pancakes from your grandmother’s special recipe?
Edamam’s service is there to help you automatically analyze recipe you input, so that you don’t have to spend time calculating nutrition information for each product that your meal includes. The service uses AI to turn free text input into meaningful information, and lets you save the results as a meal or serving for later use.
How it works
Go to the Food screen and tap on the service selection icon. Select “Show Edamam on food screen” and go back to the Food screen.
You can now see the “Analyze” button next to Edamam’s logo. Tap it and a new screen opens with the analyzer functionality. Type in the number of servings first, and then go to the ingredient list field. Here you can input the ingredients of your recipe in two general ways – you can either type it in, or you can dictate it. To get the most accurate results, please read the instructions on the screen before you start. If you decide to dictate the recipe, speak clearly and slowly, so the software can catch up. Also, don’t leave too many long pauses, as this will cause the analyzer to decide you’re finished and bring up incomplete results.
Here’s a simple example how the service works. Let’s say you have to cook a salmon meal for the whole family, but you don’t know the nutrition value for the finished meal. Type in the ingredients for Diabetic Living’s Parmesan Baked Fish recipe:
Servings: 4
Ingredient list:
4 oz skinless salmon, 1 inch thick
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tbsp grated parmesan
1 tbsp green onion
1 tsp Worcestershire chicken sauce
Tap “Analyze” and see the results for a single serving. You can also save the meal as a new food for later use.
So this is it. Edamam provides an extremely useful service, saving your precious time by automating recipe calculations. You can easily save your homemade meals’ nutrition info and use it quickly every time you decide to make it again.
Notice: Edamam service is only available for Premium users.
Bra !
Men det vore ännu bättre om man i de egna recepten kunde använda SI-enheter för vikt och volym . Det ökar användbarheten om man kan använda sitt eget språk när man anger ingredienserna.
I dont’t have diabetes but I recently had bariactric bypass surgery and am looking for a means of anaylizing my home cooking for nutrients. Will this do that or is it diabetic specific?
You can get the nutritional information about meal portions for home-cooked meals based on the ingredients you put in, and save them for recurring use. It is however a Premium feature and you will need a subscription to use it.
